The Growth of China Inland Mission: Hudson Taylor's Work

Hudson Taylor, the founder of the China Inland Mission, is a remarkable missionary who left a lasting impact on the Chinese people. Historian Ruth Tucker once mentioned that in the last nineteen centuries, no missionary has had a broader vision or executed a more systematic evangelization plan across a vast geographical area like Hudson Taylor.

J. Hudson Taylor, a British Baptist Christian missionary, spent 51 years in China, dedicated to spreading the gospel and providing hope to the Chinese population. He was described as a man filled with the Holy Spirit, faith, complete surrender to God, self-denial, compassion, extraordinary prayer power, excellent organizational skills, energetic initiative, tireless perseverance, incredible influence with people, and childlike humility.

Taylor's sensitivity to Chinese culture and his passion for evangelism set him apart. He embraced native Chinese clothing and led a non-denominational mission that welcomed members from all Protestant denominations, including working-class individuals, single women, and recruits from various nationalities. He stood against the opium trade, positioning himself as one of the most influential Europeans in 19th century China.

With his visionary approach, Taylor established 125 schools, facilitated 18,000 conversions to Christianity, and set up over 300 mission stations with more than 500 local helpers spread across all 18 Chinese provinces. He mastered several Chinese dialects, such as Mandarin, Chaozhou, and the Wu dialects of Shanghai and Ningbo, enabling him to effectively share the gospel with the local population.
